Carol -- Writer's Workshop, Carroll, Iowa
Posted on LM_NET - quoted with  permission
Author Carol Gorman (Dork in Disguise, Lizard Flanagan, etc.) visited our 4-5th grade elementary building and our 6-8th grade middle school, and I
HIGHLY recommend her. She captivated our students with her book talks, explained her process as a writer, and emphasized the importance of reading in honing one's craft as writer. Carol also held a writer's workshop with 33 of our 6th-8th graders on the topic of "Voice." Her background as a middle school language arts teacher shone through, not only in the presentation portion, but also in the question and answer part of her talk. We booked Carol through one of our fellow 'netters,  Sharron McElmeel of McBookword fame. The booking was a breeze and the informational packet that was sent to us was very helpful in preparing our students and staff for Carol's visit. (2004)

Carol Gorman - Speaks to 1000 Oklahoma Readers

Carol Gorman visited Yukon, Oklahoma in April, 2003 as part of our reading council's author visit program. The students were eager to hear about the characters in Gorman's books and learn now to write exciting stories of their own. Ms. Gorman spoke to the students who had voted Dork in Disguise as their favorite children's book...the 2002 Oklahoma Sequoyah Award winner. We were privileged to have her four days, and she reached more than 1000 students. Our culminating activity was a Saturday writing workshop with students in grades three through eight. She gave them pointers on how to begin writing and taught them the writing process while encouraging them.

Carol is a dynamic speaker and a joy to work with. We had a terrific week thanks to a wonderful author. I would encourage schools to enrich their curriculum with speakers like Carol Gorman.

Carol has spoken throughout the Midwest and the United States.  She has held over 600 students in rapture at writing conferences, in middle school assemblies, and in high school classrooms.  She speaks easily about the love or reading and writing to primary learners as well as to older students and adults.  She speaks to large groups and engages classroom sized groups in reading discussions and writing workshops.

When authors visit schools/libraries it is often not possible for each student/attendee to purchase a book -- and yet they too would like a momento of the day. We recommend that bookmarks or a similar keepsake of the day be duplicated for each child so the pleasure of the day is universal for each child, regardless of whether or not they can afford a book.
